Are Your Dogs Paws In Perfect Health?
To a dog, paws are a pretty important piece of equipment. They use them to walk with and to help them from skidding around on slick surfaces and even to help them hold things to some extent. As you can imagine, if your dogs paws aren’t in tip top shape it can be very uncomfortable and sometimes even debilitating. Here are some tips to help you keep your pets paws in peak condition.
1. The first thing you need to do is get your dog used to you touching and examining his paws. Most dogs don’t care too much for this, but if you start him off at a young age he will eventually accept this as part of your routine. Start off gently and don’t push it too much - patience and perseverance will win out eventually.
2. Make it a habit to check your dogs paws regularly, especially after he has been outdoors. You want to look for cuts or any foreign matter. Remove splinters or anything that might be embedded in his pads. If there is a lot of dirt, then go ahead and wipe them off - this will make your pet more comfortable and save you having to clean up dirty paw prints to boot!
3. Provide the proper maintenance on your pets paws including grooming the hair and nails on your dogs feet. When it comes to cutting nails, you want to establish a practice of doing this every 3 weeks or so. While the whole process of cutting nails is a subject for another article, just be sure that you don’t cut too close to the quick as this can be painful for your dog and turn him off to the whole experience. Some dogs, usually the smaller fluffy breeds, will have excess hair growing out from in between their pads. This makes it quite difficult for them to walk without sliding around so you want to be sure to trim this hair regularly. Use small scissors and cut it carefully so as not to cut the pads.
4. When outside, be careful about where your pet walks. Puddles on the road can be full of toxic substances like anti freeze and you don’t want your dog getting this on his paws - it’s not good for the pads but could also be fatal if your dog licks his paws later on and ingests a fatal amount. Be sure to keep a careful eye on where your pet steps and wash his feet off and dry them thoroughly if you suspect he might have stepped in something he shouldn’t.
Keeping your dogs paws healthy doesn’t take a lot of time, but it is an activity that your dog will be quite thankful for. Just incorporate these simple steps into your care routine and insuring your dog has perfectly healthy paws will be as easy as a walk in the park!
